Angry. Rude. Attitude. Weird. All terms used to describe this woman known as Solange. If you ask me she is and always has been an Unapologetic Real Black Woman and A Seat at The Table couldn’t be any more pudding for this truth.

I have legit been rocking with Solange hard body ever since Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams. Solo Star was cute and let’s not forget The Proud Family theme song (go ahead and sing it, I know that you are) but that Sol-Angel showed that she was truly found as an artist for me from her lyrics and vocals down to the whimsical wardrobe. I still yearn for that black and white fur coat in the T.O.N.Y. video but A Seat at the Table. I didn’t know. I slept on listening to the album for a while. Like ,I just didn’t get to it in time! There is not one moment where that album doesn’t add strength to my justified being of being black and a woman.

2016 was a year.

If you felt like crying, being angry, joyful, you did so for you and you alone.

Sometimes, your blackness gets challenged in a sense and you are expected to apologize for owning your toughness or strength even while caught up in a weak moment.

Not guilty. Really unsure if there was a way to keep track of the number of innocent black killings from police officers brought to the forefront in viral video form on a monthly, weekly and sometimes daily basis it was emotionally draining at times and others completely blaze fire driven like you needed to do or say something. We carried on with our lives daily with a hardening in our hearts and minds as you felt the pain the person next to you felt and if you felt like they carried on with life without feeling any heartache, you felt angry.

One of many examples of feelings in which was felt often and expressed throughout the year.

Have you ever listened to an album and thought that the artist(s) needs an interlude with the interludes? Although, there are a few on this album, they were completely necessary in which I find myself listening to some of the interludes as much as the extraordinary tunes. Their stories are the seasonings to the songs. Bass, snare, piano even the instrumentation deserves its own Grammy.

Again I say, 2016 was a year and A Seat at the Table defined it and it is still proven in 2017.

If for whatever reason you overslept on this meal created so tasteful and tender by Solange, grab your headphones, plug them up and warm your soul to “A Seat at the Table”. Get several slices of this black girl magic this right here is truly F.U.B.U. and our ancestors await us.

Album available on iTunes.

Have you listened to A Seat At The Table? How comfortable did you get?
